Why Is My Dryer Taking Two Cycles to Dry Clothes?

Your dryer used to get the job done in one cycle. Now your clothes are still damp, so you run it again—and maybe a third time.

That's not normal. A dryer that suddenly takes forever to dry clothes can be a sign of poor airflow, and your dryer vent is one of the first things to check.

1. Your Dryer Vent May Be Clogged

Lint doesn't all stay in the lint screen. Over time, it can build up inside the vent and restrict airflow. When hot, moist air can't escape properly, your dryer has to work harder and longer to dry your clothes.

2. Your Outside Vent Could Be Blocked

Your dryer needs to exhaust air somewhere. The exterior vent can become blocked by lint, debris, or even nests. If you're able to safely see the outside vent while the dryer is running, check whether the flap opens and whether you can feel strong airflow.

But keep in mind: seeing an open vent doesn't mean the entire duct is clear.

3. The Duct Could Be Crushed or Damaged

The section behind your dryer can become crushed, disconnected, or damaged—especially if the dryer has recently been moved. Even a small restriction can affect airflow.

4. Your Vent Run May Be Long or Complicated

Some dryer vents travel a long distance through walls, attics, crawl spaces, or even up to the roof. The longer and more complicated the vent, the more important proper airflow becomes. You may have a restriction somewhere in the system that you simply can't see from your laundry room.

5. Your Dryer Could Actually Have a Problem

Not every drying problem is caused by the vent. Heating elements, thermostats, sensors, and other components can fail. But if your dryer is heating normally and simply isn't drying efficiently, check the vent before assuming you need an expensive appliance repair or replacement.

Watch for these warning signs:

• Clothes take two or more cycles to dry

• Your dryer feels unusually hot

• The laundry room feels hot or humid

• Airflow from the exterior vent seems weak

• Drying times have suddenly increased
